Hey, I'll be driving from the Windy City to Spokevegas at the end of this month and was wondering a couple things.

1. Should I take I-90 the whole way or take I-80 to I-29 then 90?

2. Is there anything other than Wall Drug, The Badlands, Devils Tower and Rushmore that is worth a stop along the way?

3. Planning overnight stops in Sioux Falls, SD and Sheridan, WY.  Any suggestions on moderatly priced good, clean, safe
    hotels in those two towns?

Thanks!

Priceline hotels the day you need one.

I've done it and works out great.

No other advice here.

I would think the straightest route would be the quickest route.

Have you checked out a mapquest style sites to see what direction to take?

also take into account speed limits on desired roads if time is a goal of yours.

If'n you decide to do the South Dakota tourist stuff definitely check out the Crazy Horse monument. Way more impressive than  Mt. Rushmore.

If you are gonna see Wall Drug, then you must stop before at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.

The King Rope Factory in Sheridan is better than many western museums.  I highly recommend walking through the many buildings there.

Instead of superslabbing it from Gillettte to Sheridan, you can take Hwy 14-16 up through Spotted Horse and Arvada to  Sheridan.  A bit more interesting drive than the interstate.  There is a pullout just North of Gillette on 16 where you can look into one of the huge surface coal mines there - pretty impressive scale.

The three passes across the Bighorns, Tensleep out of Buffalo, Shell Canyon and Burgess Junction out of Dayton are stunningly beautiful but very very twisty, Tensleep being the easiest.  The Burgess Junction pass will probably be snowed in yet.

Taking one of these passes across and over to Greybull and back up to the interstate in Montana is way prettier than staying on the interstate from Sheridan.  There is a Smokejumper museum and aircraft boneyard in Greybull that is pretty interesting.

Deadwood up in the Black Hills is sort of interesting, gambling and lots of old goldrush history.  In Spearfish, SD, there is an old fish hatchery that is interesting to walk through.  It was where the original trout were raised that populated the lakes and streams of the west.  They have some restored rail cars that were used to transport the trout fry.

Just into Wyoming from South Dakota there is an exit for Alladin.  If you go up that way and around to Devils Tower, it takes you through some unique Wyoming scenery.  There is actually an oak forest through part of that area.  Devils Tower is definitely worth the trip.  If you want to stretch your legs, it is a couple mile walk around it.  Watch for rattlesnakes, they are plentiful in the rocks.

There is a  very large car museum in Murdo, SD that might be worth a stop.

I can go on and on about Wyoming and South Dakota so if you have a question, PM me
This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

I'm headed there in two weeks.   Crazy Horse is like 18 miles from Mt. Rushmore.
