whining noise from the timing belts?

Hello again, everyone.. I recently noticed a whining noise coming from the engine (right side) that grows louder with revs--regardless of gear/neutral. I took it over to the closest dealership and after listening to it, they said it was not uncommon for the timing belts to make that sort of noise.

Does this sound right? I've had the bike for over 17,000 miles and never heard it before (btw I had a full service maybe 1000 miles ago.) if it isn't anything big.. how can I get rid of the noise? Thanks guys  [beer]

Could be that the a roller needs some lube.

Sounds like a belt roller bearing is going.

Pull the covers and belts and check.

too tight of belt tension will cause the noise too

hmm.. I have never opened up the belt covers before.. always let the mechanics do it.. is it easy to loosen the belts or check the roller bearings?

So just to update this thread.. I had the bike looked at by a couple mechanics and they both came back with the same answer.. it was a bearing INSIDE the engine.. so their recommendation for me was to simply ride it till it got worse and then bring it back since going into the engine would not be a small job.. fast forward a couple weeks I finally decide to go through with it..
the shop took the engine apart and found tons of metal flakes everywhere--apparently from a failed main bearing. (I had done an oil change less than a thousand miles before that and hadnt seen anything at that time). We waited something like 2 months for ducati to send over the bearings and other odds and ends and I finally got my bike back the day before I headed out to Laguna Seca.. That was quite a headache and definitely lightened my wallet. Hope that never happens again :(

Wow.  Unlucky to have the problem, but lucky to catch it relatively early and act on it.  Which monster??

Thanks for the follow-up!

you're lucky....i had someone take their bike and ride it with a whining noice despite me telling them NOT TO!  (Its always cheaper to fix a problem BEFORE a failure!) Anyhow....the D-Bag rode the bike to Canada (well, only made it to NY) before the bearing in the left side case went (the one that the very end of the crank sits in!)  It was AWESOME! (well, for me anyway...looked like a hand grenade went off in the cases!)  He then proceeded to blame me (and the shop) for the failure and even went as far as loosening the oil filter to say he lost oil pressure due to us incorrectly installing it.  He eventully convinced DNA to fix the bike even though it was out of warranty (for 4 years!). Needless to say, i REFUSED to do the fix, nor will i ever touch anything he has ever again.  DNA only covered parts, so at least he still had to pay something for his stupidity. Moral of the story....Fix it BEFORE it breaks!
