Hello everyone.

I got my new header pipe in the mail and am soo exited to finally lose my big udder.

Bike is an 08 s2r1k 6000mi. Part sourced from MonsterParts Fast shipping and very easy!

First when removing the stock stuff i noticed one of the hanger tabs had broken off the left side where it was welded to the cat. Probably from running "open udder" ? adding stress to the mounting points maybe?

Second, and my real question. The stock part had a (brass?) mesh gasket of sorts where it attached to the vertical exhaust header. The same attachment point on the Marving collector seems a bit smaller and slides onto the header snugly as if it does not require this mesh gasket. I was hoping another marving user could confirm this for me.

Third the bolts where the horizontal header attaches to the forward cylinder came off very very easy. on reinstall are these supposed to be just hand tight / snug?

Last any recommendation as far as using exhaust sealer at the fittings. if i should? if so what kind?

Thank you in advance for answering what are probably silly questions for some but are stumpers for a moto rookie like myself.

I have the same ride and installed the same pipe earlier this year.

1. I did not use the mesh because it fitted fine without
2. My bolts did not come out easily and I tightened up with some good torque
3. I thought about sealer but decided to try without it and I do not have any noticeable issues or leaks

The one issue I did have was one of the threaded exhaust plugs in the pipe run came loose and was lost.  I thought I had a major ECU issue before I discovered it missing.  I ended up using one for the stock set up.  I currently have 2K miles on here since the install without any further issue.

I've installed many exhausts, and from what I've learned...

If there is a clamp fitting such as that one in such a position that would require a lot of work to undo and redo...I'm putting sealant on it, because those are the ones that seem to leak the most.

It just grinds my gear the spend many hours installing and aligning an exhaust, and have to take it apart and redo everything because of a f'n leak.

But that's me.  YMMV

Unfortunately, I don't know of a sealant that will handle heat that close to the motor.

I usually use the high temp copper stuff, but I never had to use it that close to the motor.

Chipripper-- once you get it all hooked up, please post or send me a pic or 2. I currently have the same ride and have contemplated getting the exact mid-pipe. I am curious if there is any obstruction of the oil filter. I also plan on ceramic coating the pipe. I plan on using the stock cans until I can figure out a way to custom some MotoGP cans in the one each side/high config.

Thanks for the replies everyone,

The pics don't show it but the pipe barely passes under the very edge of the filter. I was concerned about clearance so i removed and reinstalled the filter and it comes out fine. There is the possibility of spillage onto the pipe like with the stock pipe but no clearance issue. Please let me know what you end up doing in terms of gp cans. I am looking to do a 2into1 to a single gp can high on the right.

Question for garp2112
Did you mount the hangers that are welded to the midpipe directly to the motor or to the stock exhaust hanger bushing thingies? As you can see in the pics i have mounted to the stock hanger on the right and have quite a gap between the marving bracket and the stock hanger on the left. I dont think i could move the pipe up enough to mount directly to the motor. I did a search and found another post from an s2r800 marving user with a similar issue but no later posts as to how it turned out for him. Your input on this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for the reply regarding the sealant. I was worried about using it so close to the head but i don't think i will need to as the fitting is quite snug (fingers crossed). Every time someone puts something like YMMV or TTIWWP in a thread i rush over to the DMF lingo FAQ and have a good laugh. I am starting to feel like a real interweb whiz with all my new lingo so here is one on me...

What if you mount the midpipe to the inside if the hangers rather than the outside?

garp2112

OK chipripper, you made me look and see how I had the midpipe mounted...

Both midpipe Hangers are mounted to the bike's hangers.  The midpipe hangers are both to the inside as suggested by Darkstar.  The right side (brake side) mounts flush.  The left side looks similar to your picture.  I ended up using a spacer ~ .325" long to make up the distance and be able to tighten everything up snug.  2K miles and all is good.

I also threaded the O2 Sensor back in place.  I am not using it but I have not gotten around to getting a plug for the hole.

Hope this helps..

Thank you garp2112 and DarkStaR

I fineggled the pipes around a bit and got everything to line up so the mounting tabs are inside of the bikes hangers. The right side is perfect and a washer filled in the small gap on the left. Now to reroute the o2 sensor wire, wd40 the pipes and go for a test ride. :D Thanks again for your help and hopefully i will be posting some pics of my newly burned in pipes Sunday.
