Does anyone have experience with changing your front sprocket? Is it doable or is it better to go to a dealer? And does anyone know which specs the frontsprocket has for a Monster 796?

sprockets are pretty easy. i was surprised myself. when i had my 14 done i went to the dealer being a wimp about it. now i'm going back to the 15 and it's a simple thing so i did it myself, bet the dealer laughed when they did it.

you can go to the dealer and just order it with them. they might have the DP one or an aftermarket. only difference is cost.

just a thought.....a front sproket is cheap (about $20-30) however, going to a smaller front sproket does a few things which are not too good. First, it decreases chain life due to decreasing the radius that the chain travels on the front (it makes the chain bend sharper!) It can also affect suspension and strecth the chain under heavy load as the chain may be limiting suspension travel due to the path it takes and decreased length. It is always better to increase the number of teeth in the rear sproket (though this is more expensive due to the fact you are replacing a chain and rear sproket) Also, keep an eye on the swingarm after the first few hundred miles. THe ST series of bikes CANNOT use a 14t sproket as they will runb the chain on the swingarm and on the models with an alumnium swingarm will cause serious damage.

I had the dealer do mine before I picked the bike up. Makes a nice difference when starting off the line. I may do the back sprocket as well and go 14/41 just to get that 'jetfighter launch' experience  [laugh]

My dealer fixed a other M796 with a 14T sprocket, so I don't think it will harm my bike

No, it won't. It will wear your chain out a tiny bit faster, but not enough to make a big deal out of, IMHO. Enjoy your 796!

I just had the dealer install a 14t sprocket since I had my m696 in for its 600 mile service. What a difference it makes! This is a must do mod IMHO. It alleviates the shudder down low, and really just makes the bike feel much smoother overall, plus, sixth gear is much more useable.i highly recommend it! Mines obviously a 696, but u think it will apply equally for you.
