I have to agree with mitt and Rameses, when I see a bike coming towards me with thier headlight flashing, it is extremely distracting. I understand the point of being seen, but the flashing really f's with my eyes. To the point of not loosing focus. Almost like I'm being drawn towards the light.

i think that's a symptom of tardive dyskensia.

the fact is, they make you HIGHLY visible because the light is moving.  a moving light beats a bright light any day.

most people won't steer towards and kill a motorcyclist because of a pulsating headlight.  those that do would probably do it anyway.

it makes you highly visible and that's probably #2 for bike safety, #1 being gear.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

On my bike, I usually give a couple high beam flashes when approaching an intersection for a heads up.  I don't think it affects other drivers like a modulator because it looks similar to just hitting a dip in the road and having the light beam hit your eye once or twice.

mitt

Be careful doing that.  There are quite a few locations where a quick flash or two of the highbeam is a "go right on ahead" to other drivers.

That's true, it's pretty much universal for truckers

Very true, not so much in North America, but Europe and the UK, it means go ahead. I just leave my high beam on during the day, I'm a new street rider and that is one thing someone passed onto me at the MSF course. That plus a weave to the other part of the lane if possible usually gets people's attention.

On this particular incident, people day dream in their cars, I have had someone in a shopping lot turn in front of me(me in a car), no signal nothing on a two way lane!! The then girlfriend wanted to get go "get" him, I just shook my head!! Not worth it, too much to lose!

I fell compelled to point out that a flickering or pulsing light is nothing like a flashed headlight.  No one who sees a modified bike light will assume it's a 'go ahead' indication.

Which is exactly why I quoted Mitt when he said that he is prone to giving his high-beam a couple of quick flashes when coming in to an intersection.  See?
