Termi Shorty - Tune Required?

Good afternoon fellas - looking for a little help!

I recently installed a Termi "Shorty" on my 2007 S4R.  http://www.motovationusa.com/mvstore/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=581

Was an agreement ever reached over whether or not this thing requires a tune?  I have read mixed opinions.  Some say that as long as you don't modify the airbox, and you leave the udder on, then no tune is required.  Others say that any change at all to the stock exhaust requires one.  As it sits, the only change is the exhaust.

The bike runs fine, but I don't believe that means all is well.  At 130hp, it would be hard for me to tell if my bike is not running up to par.

Thoughts?  Safe as is?  If not, is there an easy fix outside of the DP chip and a custom tune?

Thanks a ton!
Jimmy

Since all you can do wthout buying expensive items is CO trim if the bike starts well, idles well and doesn't pop on decel I say leave it.

The Ducati / Termignoni conspiracy would probably try to sell you the shorty as a kit with a Ducati Performance ECU if they could. They don't, so I think it's safe to assume tuning isn't required.
That said, it never hurts to have the bike adjusted just to make sure. (under an hour labor)(or have it done at the next service)

As Howie says, if all works well - leave it [thumbsup]

How do you like the looks and sound? Great?  [moto]

Cant you only "tune" the bike if you have an aftermarket ecu?

DOH [bang]  Closed loop, can't adjust trim anyway.

So what can I do if things are off and the bike is running lean?  Nothing without DP ecu?

There is some crackle/pop on decel.  Nothing insane, but it's there.  Is that bad?

I had read a few posts and talked to people with it who did not tune or just run udder, like last months BOTM.  Also called Motovation who said no tune needed.  So I bought an installed, but now I am nervous that I may be causing harm to the bike.

Grr....

Seriously, don't worry.

It's made for your bike and your set up.
The guys at Ducati/Termignoni know a thing or two about their/our bikes.

(Closed loop - still some adjustments possible, like the ones performed at a service. Yes?)

I love it!  I had no idea Ducs sounded this good.  I had never heard one without the stock exhaust until I installed it.  My friend literally came running out to see what bike just rode by, only to see me standing there after the install grinning. :)

What I don't like is the tank expansion ripples I can see in this pic.  This is already my 2nd tank......

I thought about getting the shorty, but ran into some Arrows instead.  I like that thing!  Sounds good from the vids I've heard too.  You should coat the udder black.  That would make it kinda disappear.  That was my plan if I got that shorty.

Boo plastic tanks...Hoooray beer!

It's not bad. It's good. It's so good.

The termi's do this sort of thing. Frankly, I think it's the most satisfying noise my bike makes. I've gotten in the habit of rolling on a little throttle while I downshift, to purposely make this noise and freak out the cagers   [evil]

I ran this setup on my S4R for a month with no issues.  Wife wanted her exhaust back so I was SOL.  Never had pops on decel or anything of the sort.  I had it on a Marvin mid pipe with stock headers.  Still my favorite look for the beast.

I am not sure what the deal is, but I have a feeling running the Shorty with no tune is causing me to run far too lean.

While out riding in humid, 90+ degree weather, my bike was sputtering/pop/loss of power while under 4k rpm.  If I blipped the throttle a little while at a stop, it would make a small pop noise, the engine would cut to almost silent, and then pop right back on.  It actually stalled once while accelerating in traffic.  Also experiencing a ton of crackle/pop.  I currently only have one of two clamps holding it on, but I can't imagine the small leak that may be occurring would cause all of this.

May have to take it off until I can get a hold of a DP ECU.

Thanks!
Jimmy

Check your plugs.  They tell all.

White is bad, gray borderline, brown (any shade) is good, black and dry is rich, black and wet is oil.

As someone said above, Ducati sells that muffler for the bike without a revised ECU, therefore pretty safe to assume they intend it to run with stock ECU.

There was a post I saw somewhere recently quoting an email from an Akrapovic tech who said the S4Rs/T would not run damagingly lean even with their full system fitted on the stock ECU, though there would be more power available from a retune. (Assuming no airbox mods.)

The CAT is still there, and it is not clear the shortie flows any better than the stock set-up, even if it is a bit louder.
