Left or Right?

Stupid question that seems to be up for debate.  Would you consider the LEFT side to be the clutch side or the brake side?  Many people I ask have differences of opinion.

The right side is the one that smells like fish, oh wait, that's not a motorcycle.

The right side on my friend's 1963 Sportster is the side with the shifter on it.
