Buying a new Monster 796

Hey guys,
I'm thinking of purchasing a new 796 within the next couple of weeks and was wondering if there is any budging on new bike prices by dealers. Can you play dealers off against each other, even if its not just in Melbourne, but across Australia to get the best price?

If not, is it better to haggle on a free first service, or cheaper exhaust system?

Any advice on buying new would be much appreciated.

Although it is going back some time now we were able to negotiate a teeny, tiny, little bit with one dealer - the main Sydney dealer would not move at all. Plus we were offered a discount on their in store apparel. Nothing on the service.

We were not in the market for accessories ... but I would think that this path may have some merit.

Perhaps some with more recent/relevant info could help ... but the fact Ducati doesn't even list the 796 on their website yet I wouldn't be expecting too much.

depends on the model and i don't know if the 796 is selling well (or even released yet), but you should be able to get an exhaust included.  not many models were selling well last year so you'd get an exhaust with most things pretty easily.  just remember to walk if you don't get what you want, but also that it'll cost you at least $250 to get a bike transported in from interstate.

if they won't move on a 796 see what you can get an 1100 for.

It's been released for a few months now I believe. When you say not many models were selling well last year, which ones are you referring to? The only problem with walking if I don't get what I want is that there are only the 2 Melbourne Dealers. I am willing to pay the full cost (roughly ~17500) but I would prefer not to, or at least get something cheaper. In regards to the 1100, I can't really afford the extra that one of them will cost (insurance being another factor).

Ducati City in Melbourne had one (796) on the floor when I visited last month hidden amongst a lot of 1100 and 696 Monsters.

... and Metro Ducati in Ringwood had a red M796 on the floor when I was there a couple of weeks ago too.

+1.  Just not enough competition, you want what they have - you pay their price.  Or walk. 

Brad does make a good point though.  M1100 has been a slow seller, so maybe there's some bargaining opportunities there.  On M796 I think you'll get nothing.  Its gonna be the prime seller IMO (almost all the glitz of M1100 at a price not that much more than M696) so zero deals to be done.

Good luck with the purchase, I know that the Frasers dealers here compete pretty hard against one another.
So if there is any opportunity to play local dealers off against each other you could have a small win.

Last year the Street Fighter was another model that was not really moving either.
IMO though I think it is the price repositioning that Ducat has done to try to make the brand even more premium than it has been before. Putting it out of reach of many previous Monster owners, considering that an S4Rs was around 25k and the new naked 4V bike is $10k more 

I know when I was moving off my 620 that considering a purchase of an M1100s at around $25k was way out of the ball park for a 2V bike.

My god, I can't make up my mind. I'm now back on the S2R 1k bandwagon as I've seen a nice one for a couple of grand less than this with a very low amount of kms!

I had the same hopes when I bought my 696. Not much at all as far as fighting prices. In the Sydney market anyway. You may get a discount on next service, or installation of termis thrown in etc. Forget Frasers, as they wont budge (well for me - I got a "youre wasting your time mate, no ones gonna give you a better price on this model" - which was wrong obviously ). I ended saving a few hundred bucks going to Penrith Ducati, over the other stores. Remember if you buy from one place and then want to get serviced by another place closer to home (like in my case) it pays not to be too much of a scroogin money hungry saver, as innevitably they will remember when you come back for a service with a bike purchased from a competitor. In other words dont burn ya bridges.
