I might be relocating there in a few weeks, to Santiago. Need the lay of the land.

I don't live there, but have been there plenty. It's a beautiful place and chileans are incredibly nice people. It's like argentina without the attitude. Santiago is a very beautiful city that has the oddity that it's always kinda foggy. there is plenty of nightlife and stuff to do in santiago, and it's a short ride to the beach.  i think valparaiso is only an hour or so away, which is incredibly beautiful.

how long would you be staying there for?

It's kinda chilly here.

Does that count?

I'm relocating for at least 2 years. Not worried about the nightlife. I'm hoping that there's enough for me and the family.

and the Andes are right on top of you.  You will love it IMO; don't you live in Puerto Rico?  Incredibly diverse landscape and traversing the Andes is an adventure you and your family will never forget.  Like El Matador said, very nice people but there is a bit of smog to deal with and not to be missed is Tierra Del Fuego.  My suggested area to look is Lo Barnechea.  Crime is nowhere near what you'd think for such a big city.

I don't think I'll be buying a motorcycle while I'm down there unless I decide to stay for longer than the 2 year commitment.

Can't that be said about California and Little Rock, AK?

That is true. The intensity of last years quake was 8.8.  Aftershocks were felt just a few days ago.  For comparison the Alaskan Good Friday quake was 9.2 and the most powerful ever recorded by a seismograph. I'm not saying this to discourage you from going there.  Hell, I'd love to go myself.  2 years will be great.  Just sayin.  Maybe the recent activity has, for now, relieve some of the tension in the fault, and I did, once, stay at a Holiday Inn Express.
