so i'm doing my first oil change, and i know i'm being a moron about this but the pics in the shop manual are not clear.  can you pls tell me in the pics below which plug contains my oil mesh filter (aka oil screen).  is it the one in the 1st pic just below the oil level site glass (i.e. the one with the black electrical plug on it, which i believe is the oil temp sensor) OR is it the copper colored bolt in the 2nd pic that faces the ground?  or am i missing it entirely?  if it is the one in the 1st pic, how do i remove that electrical plug in order to get at the bolt ... does it just pull off?

thanks!!

It is the 1st pic, and you have to wiggle the sensor wire off, then use a socket to remove the nut below the sight glass (not the copper one, the bigger one). If you look into the hole, you will see a 14mm allen wrench opening. It may be fairly tight, but that is your mesh filter. Now, good luck finding a 14mm allen wrench. you may find one at NH Northern if one is near by. Oh yeah, make sure you drain the oil first. The larger plug dead center of pic #2 at 6 o'clock.

thanks guys.  oddly enough i had very little trouble finding a 14mm hex bit at pep boys.  however, i didn't get that far ... i bought a 22mm socket to get that big bolt off, but it turns out it requires something slightly smaller (i'm guessing 21mm).  so i did an oil change except for the cleaning of the oil screen.  no leaks though, so mission accomplished!

Yup join the club - I'm the proud owner of a 22mm socket (maybe I returned it, doubtful), and finally
procurred a 21mm.
I think I had to purchase 10mm, 12mm, 14mm set to get the 14mm - of course, the other two I already had.
It's going to cost me $40 to get that son of a pregnant dog out, there better be a ton of crap stuck to it.

i did the same thing seevtsaab!  went back to pep boys for a 21mm and a 20mm (just in case).  the 21 did the trick.

i did the oil change on my 2nd bike yesterday, including the removal of the oil screen this time.  i tried to clean it with a can of compressed air from staples (that they sell to clean pc screens).  i have to say it didn't do much; there was still some "stuff" in there that i couldn't get out, but it wasn't much so i didn't worry about it.  maybe next time i'll use kerosene as others have recommended.

either way i'm feeling pretty proud of myself.  i did 2 oil changes this weekend, all while my 3-yr old stood over me asking every 10 seconds "what are you doing dad?"  ;D
