Exhaust gasket question.

I've just removed the front header from my 2000 M750 and discovered a split exhaust gasket sandwiched between the flange and end of the header which slips into the head.  Is this normally 2 pieces or has it broken in half over the years?  Its hard to tell because it doesnt look like the ends are sheared.

That's the OEM setup, it's not broken.

thanks Speeddog.  I was on the verge of calling the dealer to order new ones.  Is there any other gasket that should be in there, or does the header just slip into the cylinder head?  I know on previous bikes there would be a copper ring.

Yes, there's a gasket between the end of the header and the cylinder head.

Usually they get stuck in the port due to getting squished.

Not sure whether yours came with copper ring style, I've seen a couple different types.

Yes there is an actual gasket that sits between the header and those split rings. When new it looks like two thin metal rings sandwiching a white/light tan ridgid foam substance.

If you've just removed the headers for the first time its probably still in the head

Its the first time I've removed the header since ownership of this bike.  Not sure if previous owner yanked it.  None the less nothing dropped out of the cylinder head when I dropped the header.  Maybe its still stuck in there or its totally missing.  Are they re-usable, or should I replace it when I re-install the exhaust?

I'd fish around. Its not a sure thing that they would just drop out. They are very light so it doesn't take much to keep it in place

I'm not sure if it's something you need to replace each time you pull the headers - I just don't know. But they are cheap, under $5 for a pair at my local shop. When i pulled my headers last year (2000 bike) those gaskets looked their age, so I did replace 'em
