On a stroke of luck I have purchased a 748 Showa shock for the "Fun Machine" at a stupidly low price, I have searched and read most of the post here on the DMF on the swap for the S2R1k. I know it is ideal to change the spring for the 748/999 shock for it to work best and support the Monsters weight, only I am unsure which spring rate to get. I used the spring rate calculator on Racetech's website it states that I need a 6.93kg rated spring and that the stock is rated somewhere between 7~7.5kg. I weigh 155 about 177~180 completely geared and lunch in the belly. I currently have stock forks off a 1999 748 on the front and in my opinion are to stiff for around town riding but I really like how they feel compared to the factory forks and I tend to get feedback more from front than the rear. I wanted to do this swap to balance the bike a bit more, the rear feels like it bounces/shifts around more than the front even after messing with the settings on it. So the just of it all, I want to know what spring rate to get for a 177 geared rider on a S2R1k with a 748 Showa shock. Also is there any difference in springs from different companies Eibach, Ohlins, etc?

I have a 749 rear shock on my S2R.  I went with a hyperpro spring.  They only offered one option.  When I asked about that they said it was a progressive spring.  I've been very happy with my mod, no issues.

Did you have the shock revalved?

I've read over the suspension article at Ducati Up North (http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/suspensionspring.php) numerous times and have always wondered about using a 74X/99X shock on the monster.

I have a 748 Sachs unit laying around but haven't installed it as according to that article, a change from a ~6.5n/mm spring to a 10n/mm spring is quite drastic and putting that kind of work into doesn't seem worth it...

I put a 999 shock on my 695.  I replaced the stock spring with an Ohlins 01091 31/95, which has a 95kg/mm rate.  The original was 70 odd.  I didn't revalve it, and the stock valving is fine for damping my spring.

I have the same spring, -31, i find it kinda harsh though. I am 140lbs. Maybe the raods are just really harsh here. its GREAT on the backroads and track.

@ajw85 I read up on that a little as well and I think I can get away without a valve change as the stock spring is 7.5 ish and would bump it up to about 9 or 10 as He Man stated it would be a little harsh with a 10. I have already went through the install and everything went well I think there is to much preload on the spring now but I have yet to try and set it up correctly. I will post pics but I managed to keep the rebreather on using spacers and stashed to coil next to the air box sort of mounted horizonally (think I had a little more room than stock as I have changed a few things). I was thinking about picking up an Eibach or Hypercoil rated for 600lbs but wanted to see how it felt stock before I went buying stuff, also was having a hard time finding a Ohlins 1091 in the right rate. :-\
