A Most Magnificent Monster

« on: July 05, 2011, 07:44:46 AM »

For those of you riding up and back to the races, I found a few roads that might be of interest.

All of them in the Guadalupe-Lompoc-Buellton-Santa Ynez area.

Lompoc-Casmalia Road  (Black Road)
San Antonio Road East, and West
Harris Grade Road
Santa Rosa Road  (I think they filmed some of the scenes in Death Proof along here)

Just east of Santa Ynez:  Armour Ranch Road, Happy Canyon Road

In the monterey bay area there a a few good ones too. Hwy 152 (hecker pass) from watsonville to gilroy is a nice and twisty, but the pavement on the gilroy side has alot of uneven surfaces and tar snakes. for the brave (or crazy) there is Hwy 17 theat runs from Santa Cruz to San Jose. It is well maintained and is 2 lanes in each direction, but it is one of the more deadly roads in the area and sees and incredible amount of traffic coming from San Jose if the weather is nice on the weekend. There is Laureles Grade, which runs from almost the main gate of the track to Carmel Valley Rd. it is a steep climb up and steep decent on the other side but has some nice views and some great hairpins. there is always the cruise route along Oceanview Blvd in Pacific grove. it follows the ocean from the Monterey Bay Aquarium all the way to Pebble Beach. those are all the good roads that I can think of at the moment that are easy to get to during the weekend of the race.

Foxen Canyon Road in Santa Maria should take you by Michael Jackson's old Neverland Ranch.

Yeah, just watch for mud from the fields this time of year.
