Any idea why Ducati doesn't do a 4-valve air cooled motor...ala BMW or Guzzi? Is it a heat issue with the vertical cylinder? Seems they could get some more HP out of it that way.

Most likely, yes, it's the heat in the exhaust side of the vertical cylinder.

i've seen ST2s go for as little as 3 bills on craigslist. plenty of them on CL nowadays.
One of my customers got one of those.
With ~$1500 in parts and labor added it's a really nice ride.
