Oil Leak

So I have an oil leak...  [bang] 2006 S2R 1000

Here is the thing that confuses me though...

The last service I had done (including oil change) was at the dealership. About 3 months ago I noticed that oil was leaking on my bike. It drips down off of the filter. I have inspected the engine and it looks like it is only coming from the oil filter. Being that it was time for an oil change, I did it myself this time. The leak stopped. Awesome right? Yeah, well I have since put about 500 miles on my bike since the oil change (about 2 weeks ago) and noticed as my bike was warming up that the oil leak has reappeared. The same spot too. Off of the filter. I have retightened the filter (hand tight) and have checked everything, but I cant figure out why it keeps leaking. It only leaks while the bike is running.

I used full synthetic oil and an OEM filter. I followed the steps posted on the board for the oil change and even replaced the crush washer. I think I did everything right, but the one thing I did not do is check the oil mesh screen when doing the oil change. I know you are only supposed to tighten the filter by hand but could it be too loose? When I tried to retighten the filter, it didnt budge. It didnt seem to be loose at all.

Any ideas as to why it is leaking?

84 Kawasaki KDX 200 - First naked bike. crashed so frequently the plastics wouldnt stay on.
99 KTM 620 - If you could even get the thing kick started in the first place...
02 Yamaha Zuma - not a motorcycle but still crashed and jumped it way too many times.

The filter needs to be more than hand tight.  I'd keep adding another 1/4 turn until the leak stops.

Happened twice to me after dealer visits, dan is right crank it another quarter and it'll stop being British.

My bike always leaks if i tighten the filter only hand tight.  It has to be a bit more than that, as stated above.

The K&N filter is nice since they have a nut welded on the bottom to tighten it down, since there isn't much room to get a filter wrench on.

If hand tight isn't enough maybe you ladies should hit the gym more often...

Jokes aside, I wear rubber gloves and clean the filter with some brake parts cleaner to get a good grip on it. That should be all you need to get it on nice and tight. If you use tools just be careful not to over do it or you can strip the lines. Engine case = Aluminium VS filter = Steel.
