Not my tax dollars at work - but I did find this a bit silly

http://www.wboc.com/story/15210978/scooters-in-ocean-city

- OCPD is looking for a device to check displacement on rental scooters - the 50cc flavor. That last couple years there's been around 100 accidents annually and someone got the notion that places are renting hopped up scooters and that's the source of the accidents.

While it might be quite possible that the rental places do have some hopped up ones - I'm not thinking that, that is the core issue.

Really now - you have people buzzing about a busy urban environment who, mostly, have little to no experience on a two-wheeler. Combine those with plenty of distracted drivers, hoards of pedestrians, sand blown into the road and what do you expect. There will be accidents...

-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Wow.  Talk about missing the big picture.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

It's a lot easier to see the forest once you cut down all the damn trees.
Every time I meet a new group of your friends that understand you and your weird sense of humor I'm a little more amazed that there are other people in the world like you that lived through childhood - My loving girlfriend

But if you cut down all the trees...well then... you um.

Yeah they have obviously missed the bigger picture.

When scooter rentals were first put into place, GOVT decided that to eliminate the possibility of injury, they should limit the power. uh....how bout FIFTY? Yeah 50CC is the magic number.

The reason they are now doing this (measuring ccs lol) is because they cant comprehend that the effect of the FIRST law didnt achieve

whatever. my CD just finished burning, its 4PM....im going home. you get the idea.

For closet chinascoot freaks following along at home: http://www.scootertronics.com/polinikit.html

But, umm... you need to upgrade the brakes as well. And LEO makes up some pretty good excuses to pull you over. Just saying.

I could not see one of those places spending $400 in parts + labor + lost revenue on one of their fleet. That's no way to run that sort of business.

This theory that the accidents are due to over displacement scoots is so full of holes it makes a collander look solid. Hopping up a scoot costs cash. Haphazard maintenance doesn't. They would be better off running safety inspections than trying to find a gizmo to measure the displacement

Exactly... I agree. It's really something an enthusiast would do, not a rental shop. Chinascoots are notoriously dangerous off the showroom... add in some flip-flops and a bikini and you've got instasquid.

typical local "gov and  [leo]" and moron citizens thinking they "know" what is best when they have no clue at all.  stupid.

the rental shops will want to put as little money into the scoots -- just keep them legal and running.  they couldn't give a damn about performance.

watching that video was a riot.  he acts as if he actually has a clue.

Government at its best, to be fair though, I'd rather they spend their $$$ on useless scooter displacement measuring devices than, say, more radar detectors.  Governments have long past the point where I hope from anything good from them - the best realistic approach is to minimize the damage, so the more time and budget they throw at this the better  [cheeky]

FWIW I really want an ital-jet dragster 180 for terrorizing DC - the physical size of a 50cc scoot with a 20hp two stroke (and I'm sure pulling 30+hp out of it would be cake - my 125 MX bikes were around 35hp).
