Exhaust Question
«

I am have been thinking about exhaust systems lately and have a few questions. First off I want to let you know I am not mechanically inclined so if the questions seem elementary there is a reason for it. I just don't have much knowledge of engines, bikes, etc. I appreciate everyones help.
What are the main differences between a full system and slip-ons? I understand the physical difference between the two. I want to understand the performance differences, sound differences, things like this. I guess what I want to know is why is a full system better. What does a full system do that the slip-ons does not?
The next question has to do with the ECU change when you buy Termis. I loved my 696 before the change but I thought that the change really helped the power delivery of the bike and made the bike much better. This is why I am l leaning toward the Termis for my EVO when I decide to get pipes. Should I expect a similar change if I get them for the EVO? Because the other brands don't come with the ECU is there any performance change or is simply to look good?
Is there a performance reason the exhaust goes from 2 pipes to 1 pipe to 2 pipes? I don't understand why it would be designed like this but like I said I don't have a good understanding of engines and such.
Lastly is there a full system for the EVO yet? I haven't seen anything about one yet.
Thanks again for all your help. It sucks to such a poor understanding of all things mechanical.

A full system typically uses a larger diameter header pipe and the bends are optimized for performance and flow. Slip ons utilize the stock header and are just the silencers. A full system allows for improved flow which reduces the resistance that the exhaust gas faces when leaving the engne. This results in a n increase in performance.
The ECU included in the Termi kit re-programs the fuel delivery and timing to optimize the engines performance when the intake and exhaust are changed out for performance parts. An increase in intake capability is typically what drives the need for a re-programed ECU. WIth more air entering the engine you have to also increase the fuel delivery. A re-map helps when changing only the exhaust, but it is not normally neccessary.
A lot of engine manufacturers now use exhaust crossovers at some point in their exhaust system. They are used to equalize the exhaust gasses between multiple cylinders and promote what is known as scavenging. Scavenging is when the exhaust gas pulses are timed in a manner that the previous pulse of gas helps "pull" the following gas charge out of the cylinder and exhaust system. Kind of like a siphon effect. There is low pressure following the initial puse so it will pull the following charge if timed right. The crossover is also used to equalize the sound of the exhaust.
You should definately see a difference in performance by installing the Termi kit on your EVO. Other brands don't come with an ECU because Termi has "support" from Ducati. Other brands will still offer a performance increase but an aftermarket tune is also needed to acheive the best results.
Im pretty sure there are systems available for the EVO. Look through the sponsors to the left of the page. Bellisimoto carries a lot of exhausts. That would be a good place to start.
I hope I have explained this in a way you can understand.

You have explained it well. Thanks you. I will probably purchase whatever system I get from my local dealer (by local I mean the one 90 miles away). He is the only place remotely close to me that sells Ducati and I like to make sure I help keep him in business. I had slip ons my 696 but I figured I would eventually upgrade that bike. With my EVO I am planning on having it a long time so I am considering the full system. Either way it won't be until next spring unless I find large amounts of $$ or win the lotto. I wish I like the looks of the Termi system for the EVO better. It blocks the sss worse than the stock pipes and I like the looks of that sss. I guess I have a little time to decide. Thanks again for your help.
