Gas tank corrosion - thoughts?

It would appear as though my gas tank is corroding just inside of the gas cap housing.  This is causing my gas cap to be forced upward in such a way that the cap no longer seals and gas sometimes leaks out.  Not only that but water is also getting in!

Has anyone else experienced this?

I'll try to upload photos...

Here's one of the weird stuff that looks like mildew coming out of the space between the cap and tank (could this be from evaporating gasoline?):

Here's a photo of how much the gas cap has moved because of the corrosion underneath (you can see the mildew in this one too):

It looks to me that your tank is expanding from ethanol causing the fit and seal issues.

I don't think the corrosion is the problem.

I seem to remember reading that there was a suit against Ducati for this... do you know whether the tanks were replaced by the manufacturer?

This is out of warranty and I'm the second owner but really don't want to have to buy a new $2k tank because of a defect.

You don't have to buy one.

Ducati is replacing the tanks.

It's actually the water that makes the tanks swell. There is another discussion thread about the tanks in the general forum.

You should relate your experience there. http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=25074.0
