OK CAMers - I'm looking for a little advice here.  GEICO totaled my bike!  I am wondering if you folks have any advice on what I should do with the remnants.  She has Zard exhaust and a couple of other bling items that did not get damaged in the crash.  I was thinking about swapping out the exhaust before throwing dirt on her, but I have heard of a lot of people buying the salvage bike and parting it out.  My biggest issue is time.  I will be deploying overseas by January and have a bunch of logistics to take care of before then.

Any advice is appreciated.  I told my GEICO rep I would give him an answer sometime tomorrow - but he told me to take my time in making a decision.

Of course you should remove all of the bling and replace it with factory crap.

Was the engine damaged?

Will they give you a salvage price for it?

I'm interested if so.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Buy it back and part it if you can and have the time.  You'll fetch a nice chunk of change.

The engine should be fine, it might need a new top cover to the horizontal head (the one that holds the oil cooler). The main damage was to the instrument gauges (curtains for them) but everthing else should just be cosmetic. F**K his totaled bike still looks better than my Monster 750!!! :o  [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

That damage to the cover is a good bargaining point.

i.e. "damage to the head means the head may need to be replaced and that's >$800 to get done".. i mean, say that to the ins company....

Well, the unfortunate fact is I don't have the time to unbolt a bunch of parts.  Somehow the key didn't go with the bike to DucPond, so they have not been able to start the engine.  From an eyeball assessment, the only damage to the engine appears to be to the oil cooler.  The fork tubes were scratched and the instrument cluster exploded.  Otherwise they said it was mostly cosmetic.

If anyone is serious about purchasing the bike let me know.

I already had dibs on the master cylinders if Eric decides to part the bike out.

Being faster than you thought possible…it feels good. No, screw thatâ€"it feels like shotgunning a gallon of adrenaline and chasing it with an all-night orgy aboard a burning Viking boat.
