New Monster 1100 Evo - cutting out problem

Hi there,

Had the bike 2 weeks now, first week all good, upto about 230 miles, then next morning (not a cold morning) went to start her, she fired up, but then within 1-2 seconds the revs faded below 1,000 rpm and she died.  Fired her up again, exactly the same thing, a couple more times...grrrr. Next time I kept the throttle open at about 2k for 2 mins, revs were dropping away in this time so had to keep tweaking to keep her alive.  Rode to work about 10 miles ok.  That evening went to start (heated garage at work so not cold) and exactly the same thing, but got her started rode about 10 miles, so warmed up, was sitting in traffic and she just died.  Started her up, lots of throttle and got her home.

Now basically for the last week the starting problem remains (solved by manually keeping throttle open) but the cutting out problem when stationary - even when hot (though only ever 3 or 4 bars, she's not overheating) - is getting worse.

Now one problem that I think may be linked to this is handlebar vibration - does anyone else get this?  Mine is odd in that it is only on the right hand side, my left hand is fine!  But at speeds above 30mph after about 5 mins my right hand and forearm is numb and I can only ride at these speeds for 30 mins or so before needing to stop.  I thought this might go away at the 600 mile service as the engine bedded in so could live with it until then, but wonder if this vibration on that side of the bars has knocked a throttle sensor out of place or similar?  The vibration was there from when I first had the bike, so came before these non-start / cutting out issues.

When she does idle normally she's at 1250/1300 RPM according to the readout (not the bars) - is this too low?  Where does everyone else idle?

I'm taking her to the dealer tomorrow as the cutting out is getting dangerous - for the first 10 mins today I had to stay on the throttle or she would have just died on me.  I've done about 400 miles now.

Can anyone shed any light on what may be happening?  Any solutions?!

Thank you!

Howie

Explain all your symptoms to the dealer as best you can.  Check engine light on?

She idles at the sames range my 1100s does. I have had bad problems with starting in the past, they went away for a bit, and now they are coming back. some time takes up to 5 or 6 trys to get her going.

My 1100 EVO has 3500miles on it.
The problems you described (both vibration and cutting out) are definitely not normal.  My bike ran perfectly since day 1 and till today.
You definitely have an issue. Take it to the dealer and have it check.
My knowledge on these bikes is limited, however, i understand there is no way to regulate the fuel mix, this is all done by the ECU.

The vibration issue is definitely not normal, this bikes vibrate more than I4s but is nothing like a Harley.  One thing you could try is going up to speed and closing the gas.  At this point, if it still vibrates more than a normal bike then you have an issue.  Furthermore, the left and right handlebars should feel the same, so I think you definitely have an issue. Take it to the dealer and get it fixed.

I had a very similar issue w/ my 1100 Evo. Thought I had to just get used to the "Ducati charm." Dealer tech found it was a pinched vacuum line. That + ECU reflash + TPS reset = totally different feeling. Awesome now!
