where does this go ??? 02 M750ie

so I am in the middle of diagnosing my no start problem and I pulled out the fuel pump to
to test it
when I was about to reinstall the pump I found a rubber boot at the bottom of the tank
hope some one can tell me where it goes
I am thinking maybe it's for the fuel cap opening
by the way I have an aftermarket cap on my tank

That's boot is supposed to live under the filler cap. Believe it's supposed to keep you from overfilling, or splashing, or ripping a hole in the space-time continuum or something.

They tend to fall off and go for a swim in the gasoline sea.

I'd just chuck it. Or set it on a shelf "in case I ever needed it." Either way, I wouldn't bother trying to put it back where it goes.
