Author Topic: Turn key, nothing happens  (Read 4063 times)

My '01 750 dark has been giving me problems. At random times when i go to start my bike, I turn the key and nothing happens. I can hear the relays click but no lights or power, (before you ask, yes.. the battery is charged). I replaced the two smaller relays but not the flasher, didn't think it had anything to do with it. I thought for sure it was a relay thing but it still gives me problems. It happens mostly if the weather is cold. Any ideas?

Typically that would indicate a main relay to me, but you say you can hear them click, and they were replaced.

The flasher is not likely the cause.

Seeing as it happens more when cold, I'd check all the battery cable connections, both positive and negative.

Don't forget the one at the back of the engine cases behind the rearset.

If it's not the main relay, check the "kill switch" to see if it's on the way out.

Kill switch doesn't eliminate power to the lights...

does it?

That's what i was about to say... if it was my kill switch, I would still have lights right? I checked the battery terminals, I'm getting power all the way to the relay. There is no way i got a bad relay from Ducati.

I assume you took the connections apart, cleaned and reassembled or did a voltage drop test under load.  If not you didn't check them.  I also assume you had the battery load tested.  Charged does not mean good.

Those cables have other ends...

Yep.  Negative by the breather and positive on each side of the solenoid and at the starter.  Caution!  The connection at the starter is delicate.  Careful not to break the lug on the starter.

mine is an 04 620,

i have the same problem, if i put he bike on a jump start i can turn the bike on the gauges sweep and can hear the fuel pump go on, but when pressing the start button only hear a click click sound no cranking at all what can it be?

thanks.

when the battery is not on a car battery to a jump start nothing, the gauges don't sweep no lights only hear the fuel pump go on.

anyone know if i have the same relay problem how would i know if the relays are done?

Easy test.. Put bike in neutral, key in on position, use the jumper directly on the starter to test if it's dead. Positive on the starter power bolt and negative on the motor. The engine should crank.

If it cranks it's the relay if it doesn't starters bad.

If it cranks it's the relay if it doesn't starters bad.

If it cranks all you know at that point is the starter is good.  DO make sure the bike is in neutral.

On the '01 750 the starter control circuit consists of the ignition switch, main relay, kill switch, starter button, sidestand switch, sidestand relay, solenoid and associated wiring.

The '04 differs in the solenoid is activated by the computer, the starter button is merely a computer input.  The computer also takes over the function of the sidestand relay.

Always load test the battery first or substitute a known good battery.  Open cell voltage (the voltage across the top of the resting battery) only tells you the state of charge.

Testing a starter circuit with a bad battery is like pissing up a rope.

replaced battery even though it was reading 13.0 v on meter and the bike starts right up.  but when you use the old battery nothing after 1 week not even a click guess battery after 3 years went bad even with a battery tender on it 90% of the time. go figure.

Found the problem on mine, Relay PA66-GF30 (ignition Relay) was the culprit. And also, I have removed all the associated kick stand switch and wiring.. think it's pointless.
