I have had a 620 for a couple years now and have put about 20k on it. I'm just about to do my third service.

I'm looking to buy a S2R1000 and have found 5 bike I like with prices that range from 4500 to 6k.

I know I should get the owner to let me bring it somewhere to have it inspected by a pro but that is always so hard to arrange.

I plan on going through all of the normal things I check on bikes, tires (pressure, wear), brakes(pads, leaks, lines, master), forks (steering play, excessive stiction, adjusters, try and get the wheel up to wheel check bearing play), oil(leaks, if it is topped off nice), Drive pieces (sprockets, chain, adjustment) rear shock, electrical for anything not working or hacked.

What I'm looking for is S2R1000 issues to look out for.  I will check for tank swell. I have read the following things about the S2R1000, they have some fueling issues that need sorting, they had valve guide issues and someone told me something about a spring in the transmission needing service or repair.

Do any of the owners have any tips for me that you wish someone had told you before you bought your bike?

If you have permissions to delete a topic I posted this in tutorials first by mistake can you remove it from that board.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the bike has aftermarket pipes or has had the intake modded just make sure that the ecu has been upgraded as well. It will be running lean otherwise.

Ive had my 08' for 4 years now and haven't had any issues. The thing runs like a champ. Even has the original battery. So other than the fuel tank expansion, your list pretty much covers everything.
08' S2R 1K   That was close  damn near lost a $400 hand cart.

I moved up from a 620 to a S2R1K about 2 years ago and couldn't be happier.  I, too, was on a 620 for about 9000 miles in 1 1/2 years.  With all the upgrade I had planned for the 620, it was easier and cheaper to just move up to the S2R.

I have not had any problem with the S2R, except for the expanding tank.  It was replaced this summer under warrenty.  Other than, the bike is great.  Some have complained about an engine surging problem.  It seems to only happen occassionally to them.  I have not personally experienced it.

Edit: Even though they are both Ducati Monsters, the S2R1K does feel noticably heavier than the 620.  Seat is higher and ergo is a little more aggressive.  It took me a month or 2 to get used riding the S2R (and get used to a lot more power and torque).

check the steering stops as they are pretty weak.
a hard drop can bend them.
ins. adjusters write off bikes with bent steering stops.

Thanks for all the input so far!!

I'm hoping I really like the S2R. I had done airbox, exhaust and PCIII with dyno tune and was starting to think suspension when I decided it made more sense to buy something that was a better starting point.

I think all but one of the bikes has exhaust but as far as I know none have open air boxes.

There was one odd thing, one of the bikes needs rear pads but it only has 7k on it? I think the rear pads on my 620 are org with 22k on them. Are the S2R pads softer?

Also thanks for the steering lock tip that is a good one!

probably not softer, but maybe moreso the result of someone with a big foot dragging the rear brake more unintentionally...or perhaps someone who just used the rear brake alot...or a multitude of reasons not having anything to do with the bike itself, but moreso the rider and how and what they did...

My S2R1000 surges, stalls, and/or idles high. I have not tried to get a diagnosis, but it is a nuisance. I've found that engine temp is not much of a factor, but I'd still insist that the seller leaves the bike COLD when you come to see it.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I toke my first real ride Saturday and the S2R is awesome. I got about 25 miles in. Here is a photo taken on a dirt road next to a frozen reservoir in the high 30s near rt22 in NY. Perfect morning for a ride.

I do find something I need to fix every time I look at it but that is the fun part.

Thanks again
