98' M900 gas light intermitantly comes on?

Just noticed yesterday that my gas light started coming on ....I had only gone 47 mi.
I did top off the tank at $4.29... high huh!!!? [bang]
After filling jumped on the freeway and after 3 miles came on and stayed on for the next 8.
Anyone had this happen?
Defective sending unit?
