So I just bought a 2001 monster 900 Dark with 14,000 mi on it and It's been running great but I have been noticing some sounds and situations that may be fine on a less finiky machine. But since its a ducati I have to ask;

It idled sparratically for a moment today after I came home and stood infront of the garage door. It's carbed and I have service records that state @ 11,513 mi she had her timing belts replaced
fuel filter replaced
spark plugs
air cleaner
throttle sync
and the 12,000 mi 2 VALVE service
All done by Pro Italia in Glendale CA.

I also hear what sounds like valve noise. I have Termignoni carbon slipons and they are loud. But I can still here engine sounds that worry me. Like *clicks*

I've also noticed a large power loss off the line with my 135lbs girlfriend on it with me.
Is that normal for this bike?

Any insight or advice is much appreciated. I plan on driving to NY in late June and I want to make sure A. I don't wreck her before then and B. She will make the trip.

Thanks,
Desmo

I can't help that much, but I too have had sporadic idling and occasional clicking noises in my 2000 m750.

2001 M900 is injected, no carbs.

You sure it's a 2001?

my 2000 900 is injected. It used to idle rough at about 1000rpm and would on occasion "hunt" , which is diesel term but you know what i mean. After several years the installation of mivv's and a new ecu took care of that.

No carb pile on! The 900 Monster got injection in 2000, so you should have injectors.

You say the belts where replaced - but how about the valves checked? it was due at 12,000 and you may well need an adjustment.

Regarding noise, you are going to hear some from the valve train there's always a sewing machine tick-tick-tick. If it's regular and not loud i wouldn't worry too much.

You've added 135 pounds of dead weight. You've made a marked shift in the power to weight ratio.. so yeah it's going to be notable. Especially if you're running the stock sprocket sizes. All ducs are geared optimistically high from the factory and benefit greatly from a larger rear sprocket/smaller front. The standard baseline is to drop a tooth in the front or add 3 in the rear. On my 900 I've got 15/42 - stock is 15/39
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

The valves have been checked and shimmed at 11500. I'm guessing I am not yet used to the Duc Desmos twin soundtrack.
Fuel pump and injectors check. My mistake on the Carb issue.
The idling roughness has since diminished after refueling with a different gas company. May have been bad gas or low level. Not sure.

Panda, that is a good point about the sprockets...
However I use this fine steed as both a commuter and weekend toy. I am also a college student with expensive hobbies. All this being said I would assume changing the sprocket ratio to increase torque would murder my gas mileage and my highway cruising speed (unless I run it at 5500+ rpm) :(

Thank you all for the input. I appreciate it.

P.S. I saw on another thread that adjusting the timing belt tension properly can clean up some of the "valve" noise. I'll see about that tomorrow.

1 tooth down in the front equals about 2 1/2 up in the rear.  I prefer going up in the rear.  This will raise your cruising RPM by about 500 RPM.  Since your top speed is drag limited you will probably see no difference in top speed.  I doubt you will see much, if any difference in fuel economy.

I think I'll leave her the way she came as far as the sprocket ratios. For now anyways. I might get a kit setup to swap out when I feel like kicking around more.

Thanks everyone
