DIY replacement of ignition switch?

Hey...

My wife's 99 M750 has trouble occasionally with the key binding in the ignition, meaning it won't turn from the off position.  If it's jiggled it will eventually free up and rotate from the off position.  It was a pretty unusual event, but is becoming more common.  It never binds anywhere but the off position.  I already tried spraying a lubricant into the switch...no difference.

Is new the only way to go with a key/switch?  More importantly, is replacing the switch something that can be a DIY thing at home?  I have more tools than talent, so somewhat handy is about the extent of my abilities.

I don't like the idea of having a different key for the ignition and the seat, but it's not worth putting in any more cash than needed.

Thanks for any advice.

A carby can get away with a generic four-pole switch... like from an auto parts store... if you don't need the steering head lock.

It's a bit awkward getting to the bolts from the bottom, but not bad.

I'm pretty sure a good locksmith could re-do the gas cap to work with the new key.

In spite of common wisdom, WD40 does sometimes save a lock,  If you are thinking of replacing it anyway, why not give it a try?  If it does work follow it up with graphite lock lube.

I just recently rebuilt my ignition switch, wasn't difficult.  Just a couple rivots in the back holding it together.  I drilled them out and took mine apart and fixed a grounding out issue with one of the wires that was showing through.  Also to put it back together you're going to need a couple screws.  First two I picked up were a perfect match so I don't even know what they were to help you out.
