Adding more oil than you need doesn't help anything.  You should not overfill the engine.

Adding the recommended amount is not more than you need.

Don't know about you, but I never manage to get all the oil when I drain mine.  If I put the stated quantity into mine, it would always be around half a quart or more too much.

I never get the whole 3.5 qts in either.

I usually add three...run it...and top it up to the full line after a few minute drain back.

I usually end up adding a pint.

I fill it to where I need it in the sight glass, run the engine, and then let it sit for a while to let the oil recollect.  After that I top it off with what I need.  I've never had to use the full recommended amount, always a bit less like Tiz said.

Nope.  I have it sitting here on my desk with 2 other filters scheduled for "demolition" when it gets warmer.  (An Athena filter and a Ryco).

I haven't forgotten!

I must have gone to a bad school, they taught me three quarts and a pint is 3.5 quarts.

I must just be lucky but when I drain, fill and ride the level is always spot on.  A couple ounces +/- isn't going to make any difference anyway as it's just sump material.  When in doubt I always have to figure the engineers who design and build the motor are at least smart enough to decide how much lubricant should be installed.  If you install the correct amount you will be within OEM operating parameters.

For me, I'm a lot more comfortable knowing that the oil level is exactly where it's supposed to be as opposed to a generalized number that the manual gives me.  One of those theory vs reality kind of things... while in a perfect world the perfect amt of oil might be the suggested one, 98% of the time reality butts in and it's not quite what it's supposed to be.

Also, I've heard that overfilling your oil is pretty rough on your engine... in fact people have told me that it's better to closer to the bottom/mid of the oil line rather than the top so I tend to shoot for that level rather than the top line.
