I'm completely new to motorcycles, don't know much about how to fix them just yet, here in lies my problem.

About a month ago I purchased a 2009 Monster 696 with around 3800 miles on it. Looked to be in good condition, started up fine, sounded good. No CEL on or anything. Until after the paperwork was done, the dealership called me and said they had to replace the wiring on it because Ducati had a recall on it a while back. So after paying for it, I waited another two weeks for the part to get in and them to fix it before I could ride it. So they install the new wiring box( not sure of the technical term, but the 2009 696's were known for this going out) and I finally get to ride it. It's awesome for about a week, then the CEL comes on, with the FUEL message. So I immediately went back home, turned it off and went to the owners manual to see what it meant. It says fuel reserve indicator, now im guessing that's some sensor.

Weird thing is, is the light didn't come back on when I started it back up, until about 2 miles into my next ride. It was coming on and off for about two weeks, but now it stays on, with the same error message. I'm posting to try and get some advice, before I take it to the dealership. I appreciate any help.

Uh...this means you're low on gas.  Go put gas in your bike.  Problem solved!

I wish it was that easy, but I think it's the actual sensor. Because it's the check engine light that's coming on, not the low gas light.

the wires underneath the airbox run close to the motor... they were supposed to be clipped differently on one recall.
If I remember correctly, those wires include the fuel injector wires.
so, if they worked on them... either it didnt work or they got the wires backwards?
either way, go straight to the dealer.

I have the same problem on my girlfriends 09 696.
She also gets the FUEL error code on every startup after the engine turns over.  I ran her bike out of fuel entirely last month without the low-fuel light coming on at all.  I haven't torn into it just yet, but I'm thinking that a faulty low fuel sensor may trigger that code.

Looks like this has been a dead topic. I'm having the same issue as well.

Picked up my 09 696 about 3 weeks ago. Rode it for about 3 miles and then the low fuel indicator come on, then the CEL with the FUEL code came on. I had a full tank.

It happens everytime I ride about 2-5 miles in. I know how much fuel I have, but an annoyance with the sensor being faulty.

Research shows that some of the wires are getting hot and what not...someone confirm this and point me into a DIY fix for it?

there was a service bulletin out about some wires underneath the airbox near the vert cyl head that are too close to the heat and needed to be lifted up with some zipties.
