servicing a termi kit air filter?

I'm ashamed to admit my lack of knowledge on this topic....

The special filters that come with a Ducati "Termi kit" appear to be the oiled gauze type.  Therefore they should be considered reusable after cleaning/oiling, right?  What's a good service interval, and is the ubiquitous K&N cleaning kit the best way to go here?  This is with reference to my M695 monster.

It will be reusable, yes. I've used the K&N cleaning kits, and they usually have enough of both the cleaner and the oil to last quite a while.

Were it me, I'd probably service the filter "whenever the oil gets changed, or the filter collects an unacceptable number of bugs, leaves, and squirrels." But keep in mind to check it now and again, as they don't filter very well unless they're kept oiled.

50,000 miles, according to K&N:  http://www.knfilters.com/cleaning.htm

So, for the vast majority of motorcycles this would be one cleaning and oiling. Ever.

My "once per oil change" might be a bit much, depending on how much you ride and in what conditions, but there's no way I'd wait 50,000 miles to clean the air filter on my bike.

K&N's actually filter better when they are a bit dirty. If it's not absolutely covered in crud, leave it alone. 50,000 miles is not unreasonable in an area which isn't dusty. They'll take your $$$ for cleaning kits anyway.  ;)

BTW, dirt bikes running them in Baja do just dandy and YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE what those filters look like after 1,000 miles.  ;D

Wow - 50k seems like a ton of miles for any air filter.  Sounds like marketing numbers.

I'm using a ducati "termi" and not K&N.

I guess I'll inspect and go from there based on how things look.  If it looks like it needs attention I'll use the K&N cleaning/oiling kit.  My tendency is to over-maintain.

In contrast the pipercross foam filters on my 749s specify 3k mile cleaning/oiling, or 1.5k miles for the race versions.

The filters do filter better dirty, but they certainly flow better clean...

Well, learn me somethin' new every day.

That said, a going tens of thousands of miles without cleaning my air filter would bug the hell out of me.
