Shifting problems.

Hey guys, just a quick question.  I laid my bike down on Tuesday at a pretty slow pace and now it is having trouble shifting.  It goes into first, neutral, moves without the clutch engaged in second, goes into second/third (I'm not sure if it's skipping second or not) and will not shift into my other gears when the bike is turned off.  I haven't taken it out to see if all the gears work when the bike is on but I'm assuming they wont.  Any ideas on what it could be or how to diagnose the problem without having to take it into the shop? I'm not much of a gear head so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

What model/year, and which side did you lay it down on?

This probably belongs in Tech, too.

assuming the shift lever is not bent and contacting something or at a different angle making the throw more difficult, the shifting link in the cases might have been knocked out of alignment.

is the clutch lever damaged? if the bike is creeping forward when in gear with the clutch in you may have damaged the clutch lever/master so that the clutch wont fully engage.

Sometimes they don't want to shift unless you rock them back and forth to move the gears in the trans.

In second, does it move like "I pushed it across the garage" or just a bit of wiggle?

the order of your actions seems strange... like maybe you are not actually engaging second when you think.

Mine went down on the shifter hard enough to bend it to uselessness and has shifted fine for the last 34k.  Pics of the damage might help here, too.

I would drain the oil and check the oil plug & oil screen for metal to see if there is any damage to the gear teeth.

Turn it on and go take it for a ride. I think you may me a little over-worried. Your gears are most likely fine. Trying to shift gears on a stationary bike that isn't even on is not going to tell you much.
