Right my chain does not to seem to be running in the chain guide on the swingarm correctly. the chain runs slighty to the  left away from the centre of the bike I spoke to a Ducati dealer and they said it may be the shims between the engine and swing arm have be incorrectly re-installed.  I cannot  remember how they came off but i  put them back equally on each side. So I'm not if this is an issue or not ? Before I took the enGine out I noticed the pinch bolt on the swingarm on the chain side had been mushed up from the chain running over it ? does anyone have any ideas about how my chain should be ?

Not sure if it is your problem or not, but I had the same issue when I first got my bike and it turned out the previous owner had installed the drive sprocket backwards (flipped).

Yep, have to be careful with this. The sprocket can be properly installed in both directions depending on the bike (900 vs 800,750, 620 for example).

Not to thread-jack, but how does one tell which is the proper direction to install the sprocket -given nothing in the documentation?

Combination of digging through the various bikes' service and parts manuals, and the looking at lots bikes. Several years back when I changed the rear wheel on my '03 M800 from a stock 4.5" wide wheel to a stock 5.5" wide wheel, I ran into several factors affecting wheel alignment and chain run. The 5.5" wheel that I put on came from a M900. The wheel spacers, cush drive, chain run guard on the swing arm, and front sprocket all had to be changed. IIRC, the front sprocket was actually the same part number for both bikes, but on one bike it was installed with the flange facing out (moving the chain run inward) and the other was mounted with the flange facing inward (moving the chain run outboard). I can't remember which one was which, but IIRC, you'll see it if you compare the parts manuals for the two bikes.

I don't believe the OP stated what bike he was having the trouble with, so I have no idea if the drive sprocket orientation is applicable to his alignment problem. I just posted the information because I had had some prior experience with alignment issues when changing wheels, and the orientation of the drive sprocket was a factor.

Yep it's a m750 yr2000  yeah whith the flange facing outward away from the bike it runs alot smoother and brings the chain bang On with the guide.

Another thing I'm a little unsure about is is there supposed to be any movement from left to right on the front sprocket ? Because there is just a fraction of a wiggle, the retaining ring seems fine though

Howie

There will be some axial movement, never seen a spec.

Q

^^ I agree, a little axial play would seem normal enough.
