I have a 2011 M796 with stock exhaust and ecu and was looking for the best HP/TRQ results. Would a stock ecu with a PC-V or a Bazzaz system with an aftermarket exhaust system like arrow or something similar and a K&N air filter give a equal or better performance numbers then a Termignoni slip-on with DP ecu and DP air filter? I'm looking for the best performance results but also thinking of budget too.

they'd probably yield similar results, although custom tuning a power commander will get the bike tailored to your ambient environment, gas, etc. whereas the termi kit will be better than stock, but an out-of-the-box sort of mapping.

DIY will mostly likely save you a few dollars over the DP termi kit

The biggest bang for the buck is a re-flash of your stock ecu. A PCV with or with out auto-tune (prob around 600 bucks) or a Bazzaz will only adjust A/F ratios and the PCV won't do much below 5K due to the closed loop system your bike has. The PCV uses a band aid "optimizer" to deal with the lean fueling below 5K rpms. The DP ecu is OK but expensive and it's still locked up. What you get with a good reflash is the ability to un-lock the ecu which allows for an open loop system & full A/F ratio tuning from idle to redline & you can raise the rev limit which is a real plus on the 696/796 motor. You can get all this for around 250.00 or if you go with a Rexxer system around 600 it allows you to load different maps they create depending on how you mod you bike. I went with the Rexxer and the bike runs fantastic. As teddy said your going to get similar results but a re-flash offers more tuning options. Do a Rexxer & a PCV search on this forum there are a ton of posts about tuning these bikes.

Whatever you choose, get the bike Dyno tuned. Every other option is a ghost hunt at best.

Have you put those numbers against a pro tune?   popcorn

Yes  Cool.

But how does a dyno do its measuring?  By sampling what?

the pc v tell the % of fuel change from stock.

a pro tuner relies on the afr mixture to setup the pc
the autotune relies on the afr map to setup the pc

the pro tuned pc relies on the ability of the protuner to properly interpret the afr
the autotuned pc relies on the quality of the afr map

either way, your output is only good as your input.

.. and the output of my inputs has been dyno crosschecked and delcared... "nothing to do here"  Cool

Not true, maybe 5 years ago it was but today's software is making such good results with the PCV & Bazzaz it's not a ghost hunt by any means. Hell a lot of Dynojet "tuners" just use the the A/F ratios from pre-programed software anyway so having this package on the bike is not much different. I still think a good tuner who has full access to an ecu will get a slightly better result then the current on board systems but in a few years time that will probably not be the case. Also were talking about a low hp air cooled 2 valve motor running on pump gas. The reflashed ecu's offered for these bikes are damm good they provide a very linear power curve with smooth power from low rpm's all the way to redline with great throttle response while adding a little hp & torque not a ghost hunt at all.

Thanks for the great advice.

I think I will try the bazzaz z-fi with the z-afm system and see how it goes. I've heard good thinks about these products and hopefully they will do good things for my bike. Thanks JD
