Question on Oil Level

I know, this sounds like I'm a noob, but I just had the bike ('04 S4R) serviced and I've noticed upon start-up that the "Maint" is coming up on my display.  Not sure why, but then I checked out the oil level and with the engine off, the sight glass is full.  When the bike is running, it's at half.

I'm guessing my bike is overfilled.  I always change my own oil and fill it to half level in the sight glass at rest.  This I believe is correct.

Thoughts?

How many miles are on the odometer? Maintenance intervals are roughly 6.5, 12.5, 18.5, and 25k for your bike. Did the odometer hit one of these points? You can reset the Maint indicator yourself (there's a forum thread/how-to somewhere on the boards here) if needed.

For oil level, this is from your manual:

Engine oil level can be checked through the sight glass
(1) provided on the clutch cover.
When checking oil level, the motorcycle should be
upright and the engine cold. Allow a few minutes for oil
to settle to a steady level after stopping the engine. Oil
level should be between the marks near the sight glass.

When you check the oil, has the bike been level for a few minutest, at least?

I was at the 12k.

I just found the sight glass thing in my manual.  Looks like I'll drain some oil as the bike was at a level rest for a few minutes.

Thanks man.

Found the reset thread:

"Press and hold the left button.  Turn the bike on.  Keep button pressed while the speedo/tach needles go up/down, and then turn the bike off.  Now let got the button.  Now you should be all set."

I had to do it twice on mine, either because I didn't do it quite right the first time, or because it's a Ducati  ;)
