Use a GPS on your motorcycle?

OK, so I've been experimenting with Alan's Garmin Nuvi 550.  It is simply inscrutable    I've never seen such wasted effort just to plot a ride route.  I really do hate it.

Can anyone with a TomTom tell me anything about the ease of plotting custom ride routes?  I'm seriously ready to just wing-it with *%$&$@@! paper maps for the Arkansas trip in a couple of weeks.

I have a Garmin 440 or 400. can't remember.
Great sat nav but, take a map as well. I used mine in France, it got me where I wanted to go but you never really know where you are IYSWIM.
It took me on an 80 mile detour, I knew it was wrong but without a map you have to trust it.

Well, FINALLY, the Garmin Nuvi is programmed for each of the four days of our Arkansas trip.  Looks exactly like the way I plotted it out on google so I think we're good to go.  Also got the Arkansas board of tourism to send me three current road maps so they'll get marked up accordingly for each of the day's individual ride routes just in case I need a back up.

So, with less than a month to go, the route is in the can  

Next step, secure my RAM mounts for the GPS to the 999's top triple.  Should be an interesting exercise in... engineering.  Yeah, engineering.  That's it    

Of course if any of you are having second thoughts on this Arkansas Extravaganza Oct 19 - 22, no worries - let's ride

Just got the new Dunlop Q2's broke in and the replacement tail running lights will be replaced this week or next as time allows.  Not sure why both of them burnt out but I'm hoping that's all it is, fuses look good.  A little more general maintenance and I'll be ready to go.  Really looking forward to this trip.
