After a small make the beast with two backs-up this off-season I've found myself with a fully functional, yet slightly tainted ECU. Bike runs fine – same as always – however I had to bypass the ECU's starting circuit because it was fried by a backwards battery...

Anywho, as a person who hates faulty electronics, I'm considering replacements.

Obviously a new DP-flashed ECU from one of many sources is a good option for around $500 beans.

However, I recently discovered the Microtec unit and am curious about it.
Would it be a worth-while investment for a street rider? Is it worth the extra ~$500 over the DP unit?
Is it a reliable option?

Talk to me about it...

From what i learned today at ECS, they have someone who wrote an in house program to fully map the ECU in all ranges once unlocked. Since they are sole owners of the program, they have are the only ones who can do waht they claim to do (which i didnt bother asking) They charged $600 (base rate no including unforseen events)+250 for a full dyno tune per cylinder (No Power commander needed) + unlock. ofcourse the difference is that you can communicate with the microtech and only they can communicate with the ECU.

they are still having some connectivity issues with the merelli ecu, but they are not charging for time spent on that, sort of like the USB plug in but it wont detect so u have to restart or do it a few times sort of thing.

I run a microtec on my bike. No issues, fully tunable. No need for a PC.

Could you elaborate on the "No Need for a PC" comment?
I was under the impression that you needed a PC to work the unit.
As a Mac user, this is keeping me away from it.

How exactly do you tune the unit?

I believe he means Power Commander in this instance.

i have a macbook air that i use to tune the ecu in the bike and my car as well as my sound processor. damn well the best thing for it IMO being a solid state computer, small, light and very solid. If its a later model mac (IE Intel chipset) it a lot easier than it used to be to install windows as a sister operating system, plenty of how to's on youtube even for specific models of mac. now when i reboot i just hold the option key and then get to choose wether i want it to be a mac or a windows computer.

i use the ignijet ecu on my monster. it did require some modified mountings but there was no extra wiring needed on the bike. it was running and tuning awesome! i was absolutely chuffed with it  Grin but then something went wrong  Cry i cant blame the ecu for sure so i don't wanna go into details, but don't take it as a negative on the ecu yet. When i get it sorted i can let you know.

i can tell you one thing for sure, if it works as it did before it is a great bit of gear and a damn sight cheaper than the microtec

Yea I figure I could set up windows on SOMETHING... Would be nice if someone would make a damn fully tuneable ECU with an iPhone app already.
