I'm working on starting up an M620 that has been neglected for a number of years. The guy who owned it previously had it out in the rain and it simply wouldn't start. With a new battery, the lights come on and the gauges work, I also hear the fuel pump come on. When I tried to start it however, I found that the bike had no spark. A quick multimeter test tells me that the coils are not getting any voltage when I crank the bike.  The fuses (orange) near the battery tray are also fine.  In an effort to work through the simplest solutions first I'm trying not to assume the worst, although it looks like there might be some faint damage to the gauges, and when I took them off and something in there rattles.

How do suggest I proceed?  Thanks!

Do the gauges sweep? I'm guessing yes if the pump primes.

Does the starter engage when you hit the button?

And just to be sure - you'v got in in neutral and or holding the clutch lever to the bar
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Yes.  The gauges sweep, the starter engages, and I have in neutral.  The orange light on the gauges stays solid and the maintenance light is on (this may be a result of the mileage, just over 6,000). The solid light may be an immobilizer issue.  I have the red key with a metal tag, but using that key doesn't change the situation.

Do you have the black key(s)? SHouldn't be using the red key

Ok, stop using the red key. It is only for resetting the immobilizer - not for day to day use.

The immobilizer may be active - but I don't have an immobilizer equipped bike so I'm a bit IZ_ on what the light codes mean.

From the owners manual:

Procedure to disable immobilizer engine block
through throttle twistgrip
1) Turn the key to ON and fully open throttle. Keep it
open. The EOBD warning light turns off after 8 seconds.
2) Release the throttle as soon as the EOBD warning
light turns off.
3) EOBD pilot light will flash. Count a number of flashes
corresponding to the first figure of the code, open full
throttle and keep the position for 2 seconds, then
release. In this way the input of one figure is
acknowledged, EOBD pilot light comes on and stays on
for 4 seconds. Carry out the same procedure for the
following figures of the code. Failure to do so will cause
the EOBD pilot light to flash 20 times, then it will stay on.
This means that the procedure has been aborted. It will
be necessary to turn the key to OFF and restart from
point (1).
4) Repeat operations described in point (3) up to the last
figure of the code.
5) Release the throttle twistgrip, if the code is correct,
the EOBD warning light shall flash signalling that engine
block has been disabled. The warning light turns off after
4 seconds.
If the code is NOT correct, the EOBD warning light stays
on and it is then possible to turn the key to OFF and
repeat the procedure, starting from point (1), as many
times as necessary (infinite).

The 'code' they are referring to is the metal tag with your red key.

Thank you, I will try this out and report back.

If it's immobilized then you shouldn't have any cranking?
How do the coils look? They can't be too good after a few years out in the elements?
First step would be to go over all the earthing points on the bike and give them a good clean-up!

If still no good then i'd be looking at the crank angle sensor / crank position sensor as a possible issue.

Enki

I took a video of the issue.  Thanks Kyle, I'll take a look at those parts.  However, the solid light looks to me like an indicator of a possible antenna issue.  It flashes twice quickly, and stays solid orange.

Here's the video: Immobilizer issue Ducati monster 620

I'm not sure exactly what your problem is, but my dash will indicate the same check engine light, but my starter switch does absolutely nothing. I would assume the immobilizer wouldn't allow any starting, so your problem might be another issue.
M620 turned M800 but then back to M620 after the M800 died at 110k, and now to Multi 1000.

kyle

Yeah not 100% but I reckon its not your Immobilizer..

Lift the barrel cover of, disconnect the antenna then try to start it up

Enki

hmmm..I tried disconnecting the antenna.  No luck.

Enki

The problem remains that the coils aren't getting any voltage.

hi! I am having the same issue how did you solve it?
