I had  exactly the same experience, and just oiled the filter and rode the bike.  14,000 miles later everything is fine.
what product did you use to oil it?
m696: full termi kit; works fender eliminator; Rizoma; crg bar end mirrors, alarm system; ducati corse decals; blackened heat shield covers;
848 evo: rizoma

I used the original authorized official certified K&N filter oil.   Not sure there's anything so special about it though.

Damn I'm too late. I had the same issue. I bought my 2009 696 new from the dealer in 2011. They said they installed the Ducati Performance Race Kit before i picked it up. Included was the Termi exhaust, ECU, and Race Air Filter. I found out they didn't give me the Race Air Filter lid, so I searched and Pro Italia was the only dealer that knew what I was talking about. I ordered the lid last year and installed it, and noticed my Ducati Racing Air Filter looked like a bone dry K&N cotton gauze filter. Everyone on the Internet said it should be oiled (except for 1 or 2 people). I oiled it using K&N oil, not thinking to contact another dealer.

Fast forward to this year and I contacted Pro Italia, they said the filter was designed to be run dry!!! The replacement is $86

I'm not sure if I want to replace it, or keep using it in the oiled state because it'd be just like a K&N now. I tried contacting Sogefi Filtration but no one picked up in the US office (their name is stamped on the filter lip).

I'm also looking for a better dry filter solution, like an AEM, but AEM doesn't make these for motorcycles.
These aren't the droids you're looking for

Designed to run dry on a race track. Street use, add some oil. That's what the mechanic said when he installed my filter( I questioned him on drops of pink oil under my bike). I installed the Termignoni kit myself on my new bike and went to cycle gear and bought a spray can of gauze type filter oil and cleaner from their large selection.
