I am trying to remove the oil filter on the 2000 Monster 900 I purchased recently.  The oil has probably not been changed in at least 5 or 6 years.  I have tried a strap type filter wrench but it is not coming off.  I am going to purchase one of the wrenches shown in the Haynes manual.

I am concerned about damaging the threads on the filter boss.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!  Rick

i recommend a big plumbers wrench.  it might put a hole in the filter and will definitely damage it, but who cares?

I've used penetrating oil and filter pliers. It took some time and I destroyed the filter, but it came out eventually. The filter will usually give before the threads on your engine will. Some people have been successful using a screwdriver through the side of the filter.

this.
hammer an old screwdriver through the filter (piercing it from both ends) and turn.

^ This.

And just a heads up if it isn't obvious: oil will immediately spill everywhere when you puncture it.

Got the darn filter off.  Went to NAPA and bought a filter wrench with three "arms" that tighten on the filter as you turn it.  Uses a 3/8" socket connection so I used my breaker bar for leverage.  No damage.  New filter on.  New oil in.  ALL GOOD!   ;D

Also installed a new Yuasa battery.  Siphoned the old gas out of the tank and put in some new premium and fired her up.  Once she warmed up, she ran quite well.

Now, I just need to change cam belts.  May have the Ducati dealership do that.

Tires on the way.  Avon Storm II Ultras.  Same as I run on my ZRX.
