California Riders - Aftermarket exhaust question

Hi everyone,

I have long been a proponent of quiet pipes and avoiding getting pulled over just for the noise I am making.  However with a new 2013 EVO in the garage a set of carbon Zard's or Termi's is calling my name.  My bike being a 2013 I am somewhat afraid of pulling the emissions controls and piping the bike.  I read on the CARB site that 2013 bikes have to have an EPA sticker on the pipe.

I pulled the stickers off my frame and saved them (except GVWR sticker it got tore up) is there any chance any of the European street legal pipes will pass muster?  Is anyone getting pulled over and written tickets?  Is anyone getting hassled for their pipes?  For me it is more about aesthetics (I don't like the stock can) than performance.

I live in Nor ca. & have been riding various bikes for years with after market pipes some a lot louder then your evo will be. I've been pulled over a bunch (for riding like an ass-hat) and never has a cop looked at my exhaust. As long as you have your M1 lics. current ins. & registration you will not have a problem. I've been let off with numerous warnings just because my paper work was in order and I treat the cops with the respect they deserve. I heard it was the 2015 bikes that will need smog checks. Some of the pipes I've ran were stamped "use on closed coarse only" But if CARB site says epa sticker needed that may be for resale unless they req. smog checks I can't see them enforcing it.

officially you can only be cited for the EPA label violation if you're pulled over for another violation.  kind of how seatbelt tickets used to be.  that said, we're pretty much all doing something wrong most of the time so they really wouldn't need much of a reason to pull you over if they feel like citing you. 

It's a fixit ticket, so you'd just need to prove correction and get it signed off, then pay the fine.  So might want to keep your stock pipes around.  Or buy a pre-2013 bike.

Thanks for the comments.  Being 47 years old and sporting a grey beard and hair may make it easier.  I just can't imagine a cop getting mad enough at me to start asking for stickers.  So I am going to assume that since straight pipes are the hallmark of the Harley crowd a nice set of Zard silencers with DB killers should keep me out of trouble.  As for selling it?  I bought the five year unlimited mileage warranty so it ain't gonna be worth a whole lot when it hits it's fifth year birthday.

For what it is worth back in the SoCal canyon racing days I got pulled over specifically for aftermarket pipes, three times.......  The way the ticket read I could fix it or pay the fine.  I sent them five bucks and never removed the pipe, three times.......  I am thinking it was the red F2, white full leathers and extremely long hair combined with a bad attitude that really got me into trouble.
