2009 M696 - what kind of mileage should I expect from a well lubricated and adjusted chain?

Also, recommendations for replacement chains?

Does anyone know off hand if the original chain is x ring or o ring and the size and length?

Howie

Chain life has many variables, OEM probably anywhere from 9-15 K miles.

Any chain sold by our sponsor California Cycleworks.  I like DID, just my preference.

108 links, no idea if it is O or X since the exact model does not show up in  DID's catalog.  Do replace with X ring.

DID x ring chain.

you should get about 15K out of one without any issues.
Personally, I replace the sprockets as well when I do a chain, and check the cush drive, for peace of mind.

doesn't hurt to do rear wheel bearings if there is any amount of feral there.  clean the axle, shims and brake calliper.

clean the swingarm while the wheel is out also - if you spend a few hours then you will have a spotless machine.
