07 s4rs won't rev past 4k, dies at idle after revving

Hey guys, posting this for a friend...

We just went and picked up a 07 s4rs for him, ran great during the test ride... Problems came up once he tried to ride it home.

It won't rev past 4k, hesitates around that point and won't really go past 30-40 mph.  One thing that happened beforehand was that the battery was dead and we had to take the tank on and off a lot to jump the battery. When it started to act up on the way back home we bought a new battery and the symptoms continued.

At this point I'm thinking it might be a clogged fuel filter from us moving around the tank so much.... Does that sound about right? The system not getting enough fuel would cause these symptoms?

If not... Any other ideas? The bike was sitting for a while, since fall.

Might be the filter, it is a maintenance item, so it is not a bad idea to change it anyway.  While you are in there, check the in tank fuel lines, both for condition and type.  They should say SAE 30R10.  Do make sure the vent hose isn't kinked too.

Was it running on both cylinders? My plug wire got loose and ran like hell. Can't remember if it revved only to 4K though.

Thought posted this up for me.  I'm upgrading my S2R to this S4RS.

The bike had to be jumped since the battery was dead from winter storage (not tendered).  It ran fine during the test ride, took her up in all gears up to 8-9K rpms, pulled strong, sounded great, stopped great.  Nothing out of the ordinary and no symptoms of anything wrong.  We had to jump start her again before I left since the test ride didn't leave enough charge (I was going to ride it back from CT to NYC so I figured that would give me enough charge until I tender it in the garage).  Not 8 miles from the shop the power dropped and revs cut to 4-5K and I couldn't go anymore than 30-40mph.  So I pulled over.  Thought was in the car ahead of me so we were able to get a new battery for the bike at Autozone but that didn't resolve the issue.  In neutral the bike will manage to rev upwards of 4-5K rpms but it does struggle at times to do so.  While riding, it felt like the bike wanted to go but was starved, it would start to rev up then lose revs and settle around the 3-4k mark.  30-40mph max.

The more he and I thought about it the more the fuel issue made sense.  Lifting up the tank to get to the battery must have moved some sediment around which could be clogging the filter.  I HOPE.  Since I did just pay for it and didn't get more than 8 miles out of it before problems started.  I managed to limp the bike back to the shop and park it there.

Anyways - she's an 07 in red with the white stripe and currently the most expensive and gorgeous paperweight I own!  Will keep you guys posted on the outcome.

Thanks for the advice guys... we got it back to the shop we bought it from and we're going to have them take a look at it.  Sounding more and more like what we thought was the issue is it.

and here's the pic of the new but sadly not running toy ;)

could you have kinked a fuel line with all the tank removal?  Prop the tank up and make sure all is well with the lines.  Start it up and see if that cures the issue.  If it does, put the tank down and watch where the line/lines are being pinched.

Yea we did check this and it definitely was not a kinked fuel line.

I had a BMW K100 do this to me on the way up I5 from Cali one time, I had just filled the tank. I always carried a spare fuel filter with me, and after getting my arm all wet with gasoline finished the ride. Having the filter accessible from the top of the bike was a very handy thing. I wonder if an outside of the tank filter setup would be possible..........

Just an update to close out this thread.

A new fuel filter cleared up my issue as well.  Took the bike out a few weeks ago for an extended ride and didn't have any of the issues at all.

Thanks again for your help guys.
