Not sure if this should be moved to mods or not?

Short story is I am planning on taking my S2R 1000 on a 1,600 mile trip from North to South in August. Have read all sorts of horror stories about the R/R going out. Is this something I should preemptively fix? I have no desire to be stranded in the middle of the SW desert.

Thanks for any help.

You should probably put together a spares and tool kit to match your journey.  There is a thread here regarding the ideal tools to have.  If you have the room, carrying a spare R/R should not be hard, however, the later models have little issues with them that I am aware of.  I've a 2005 S2R and plenty of miles and no issues with it.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Already have the spare tools thread bookmarked and tire plug kit has been ordered [thumbsup] I was more worried about the R/R dying because of heat, as that seems to be the main issue. I can think of few things worse than being stranded with a broken bike in Southern Idaho or Utah with a high likely hood of there being no beer around (last time I was through there was in the 90's and no alcohol was sold on Sundays, strange I've come closer to seeing god with it than without [laugh])
Are there any other problem spots I may want to look at? The bike is currently at about 9500 miles and is getting new belts, rubber, fork rebuild/upgrade, new rear shock and some pretty stuff as well.

For the size/cost/piece of mind I might just buy a spare R/R.  It sounds liek you'll be packed up too.  A spare R/R can probably fit under the seat or if youre adventurous, find a place to screw it to.

Some folks have relocated theirs to get better airflow.

Just make sure you put some miles on the bike with that work being done before you set off.

Thanks for the advice, I plan to ride as much as possible in the time I have, I'm basically using vacation time to get the bike from ID to AZ, so hopefully I can get a couple 150 mile rides in to get my butt in shape for riding and address and ergonomic issues..custom seat is in the plans as well

They're really not that bad. Don't worry so much.
