2006 S4R is making an awful noise now and I can't find the origin.  Any of you guys have similar problems and know where I could start to trace it back to?

Sounds like the pushrod heim joints need grease.

Likely best to grease the shock ends as well.

I had the same exact problem. Discovered that the balls in the heim joints on the hoop were dry. Sprayed them with a touch of lith grease and no more embarrassing squeak.

I sprayed everyone I could or thought to.  When you say helm joint you're talking about the bottom?

Pushrod top and bottom, shock top and bottom.

Remove both, work grease into both, refit, check for squeaking.

how can I remove it?  I can't hardly get my hand in there.

Lift up by subframe, from rafter or hoist or ladder.

Remove lower bolt from swingarm, and both upper bolts from rocker.

Remove shock and pushrod, clean and work grease into heim joint ends of shock and pushrod.

My 900 made a similar noise. Like speed dog said - I suspended it and lubed all the points of movement for the rear suspension. Nice n quiet after that
