2011 M696 starting issues

I have a 2011 monster 696 abs and on occasion When attempting to start the bike when its cold, the engine would turn over and ten immediately stop followed by a short "hiss"; then the bike would turn off and restart. After the restart the dash would read "0005 RSW". I initially thought the reason was due to improper starting procedures which I corrected by ensuring the bike went through the complete start up and setting the choke to full each time I started. This has reduced the amount the issue has occurred but not eliminated it. Also after the reset the trip meter and time is zeroed out.

Anyone have any ideas?

First step, have the battery properly charged and load tested.  The code you are reading is low voltage.

My lists of Siemens ECU error codes say this:

"P0005 = Fuel Shutoff Valve A Control Circuit/Open"

Any idea why it would have low voltage on the first attempt to start and then start up perfectly fine after the reset? The voltage on the dash is reading 12.5 before start up. Also this is a daily commuter so it doesn't go more than two days without starting.

Is the "P" supposed to be there because it doesn't display on the readout.

I'm not sure, but I think the P0005 code ungeheuer is talking about is the standard OBD II code, which even on your new Camaro or Accord would be  "Fuel Shutoff Valve A Control Circuit/Open".  According to your owner's manual what should show up if you have a battery or charging system problem is BATT 05 LOW battery voltage level or BATT 05 HIGH battery voltage level accompanied by the engine check light.  If my memory works, which could be possibly be faulty, others on this board have seen 0005 RSW displayed on the dash when faced with a week battery either from a bad battery or faulty charging system.

The 12.5 volts you see before starting indicates state of charge, but not necessarily condition.  When you hit the starter button the battery now has a load on it.  If the battery is not able to maintain sufficient voltage under load you will have starting problems.

Check your standing volts. Also, if you have a light weight battery, it might not have enough cranking amps. First though, always make sure you have sufficient standing volts.
