I think Ducati had the right idea in creating the Streetfighter - that it would create a bike for the crowd that wanted the more modern, aggressive look, and racer like appearance, and leave the Monster to have the classic look.  Look at what Ford went through with the Mustang.  In the early 90's, it still looked like  a Mustang. But by the mid 90's it got a whole new look, and sales / popularity dropped steadily.  They went back to the classic Mustang look in 2005/2006 and sales went up, at least from the figures I found.  Don't mess too much with a good thing
