2000 M750 Water in Fuel Tank

Like the title says I'm having issues with rain water intruding into the tank. Not a little....like a cup full at least. I just bought as nice "waterproof" cover (instead of the $20 speacial from WalMart) but I'd like to remedy the cap for good. It's an aftermarket cap but all the O-rings appear to be sound. Where should I start trouble shooting?

Post the brand cap and photos if you can.

They might appear to be sound, but if water is getting in the tank they absolutely aren't sound. I would go back to the original and not wash the bike or ride it in the rain until them. These tanks are known to rust in a garage, you don't want to help them.

In the gas cap opening in the upper pic:

at 12:00 is the vent to the inside of the tank.
OEM setup has a rubber snout on it, mates to the cap, which has passage and valves to inside of tank.

At 3:00 is the drain for the gas cap opening.

Likely that's plugged with debris, allowing water to pool up and get past the (usually dodgy) seal between the aftermarket cap and the tank.

Actually impresed with the tightness of the main seal. Pretty fat O-ring that seats tightly. I am aware of the drain/vent tubes. I was going to check them tonight. Thanks!

Blew air through the drain tubes. Sure enough the cap drain was clogged. All good now.
