Engine Swap Nonsense

So, you want to swap engines?

You are in luck.  For the most part, all Ducatis are the same.  If you follow my advice and it is wrong... you are on your own.  I make no warranties, and you shouldn't be able to find me anyway.  I'm just a guy with a couple of bikes.

AFAICT, any engine fits any frame.  Exceptions: 99 and earlier frames have 10mm frame bolts; 2001 and later have 12mm frame bolt.  Those bikes in between are a grab bag.

AFAICT, the differences between "large" and "small" case motors have to do with the internals, the exhaust port locations, and the timing belt length.

AFAICT, Monsters, SS, and STs have the "wide" swingarm mount; SBKs, Multis, and Hypers have "narrow" swingarm mount.

There are differences in the cross brace for the "forward" portion of the frame.  Some interfere with linked carbs, some interfere with SBK setups, some interfere with 2V injection setups.

3-4v engines seem to use the same throttle bodies.

Later 2v i.e. engines appear to have the same intake spacing (800 throttle bodies appear to fit on a 1000ds).

Timing for the "new" 2v engines is different than the "naughties" 2V (due to gearing/missing tooth issues).  The older bikes are 48-2, the newer bikes are 48-4/2.  Carbies end up with a large lump (one tooth) and a spin around the old horse...

the manifolds vary.  all carbs and throttle bodies are in exactly the same place, as the airbox is the same for any given model / year.

Good to know.  Thanks!

Large case motors are taller, from the base gasket surface to the top of the head.
Exhaust and intake ports are higher, so intake and exhaust manifolds are different.
Countershaft is further rearward.
Bottom of the sump is lower.
DS1000 exhaust ports are in a different location.
