Mating new Gauges

Anyone have any experience with mating gauges to the stock ECU & key. This would be as opposed to flashing the ECU to disable the immobilizer.  I've also heard of removing the chip from the old gauges and putting it in the new gauges. Anyone have any insight on either of these approaches?
