G'day guys, my name is Mick, I am from Melbourne, Australia & I currently ride a Yamaha TRX850.

For those of you unfamiliar with it, it a trellis framed parallel twin with a 270 degree crank, sometimes called a Japcati, or poor mans Ducati, or even a Reliable Ducati...  Grin

That's it over there

Ducati ownership is inevitable (long black normally, the odd strong Latte, thanks for asking), I grew up on the back of my old mans MH900, many fond memories of that, including him starting it without any exhausts  Grin

From that moment on the twin rumble was always exiting, the first time I saw a TRX in the flesh I heard him coming in the car, he split past me two up & I remember thinking "That's not a Ducati..."

A Sport Classic in Tri-colore with a full fairing would certainly not go astray, but that's not why I'm here.

My wife also rides & she has her heart set on a Monster.

I am unfamiliar with the model lineage & easily confused, so I'll be asking around for some idea, recommendations, etc.

Then, obviously, it'll be up to me to keep it running... So I'll probably be around a bit  chug

Cheers, Mick.

I love the TRX.  Nearly a copy of the 90s SS but for the engine..  They even used the same carbs..

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Thanks for the welcome Herm!

Is that a section here or a seperate forum?

It's a section of this one:
http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?board=52.0
- but we allow you crims to come play with the rest of us too  Grin

There's probably some folks in Melbourne. And I think 'SuzyJ' is in Sydney - so if you take a weekend trip east you should let them know. SuzyJ is quite the wizard and busy improving a perfectly functional 695.

There's plenty of model options for the Monsters, from smaller 6xx cc air cooled, 2v versions, to the Superbike (999) powered S4Rs as well as just about anything in-between. So you'll have some questions to answer such as Air or Water cooled, displacement etc. We're happy make recommendations - it's fun to play with another money.

One thing I'm not sure you guys have to worry about is the plastic tanks. IN the US, they have stuck us with 10% ethanol by volume in our petrol - or as Jeremy Clarkson calls it 'American Fairy Juice'. That Ethanol has lead to big problems with the fuel tanks on monsters, sport classics an some other models from 2005 to the change up in 2009. The plastic of the tank expands when exposed to water. Ducati has had to replace a lot of gas tanks that have swelled significantly. There's quite a lot of info on the problem on here if you wish to read up.

Dead thread alert!

Well, it's been a while, but we take delivery of the wife's 2005 S2R 800 this week, all going well.

I need to organise a RWC 'cos the seller is now overseas & didn't have time, but we did manage to negotiate a slightly better price because of that.

Any good suppliers of chain & sprocket kits for these things? I've been looking at the quick change sprocket setup, but that might stretch the budget a little too far at this stage...

Welcome.

If y'all have ethanol, coat the plastic tank asap. Good luck closing the deal. The Aussies here can help w/ parts supplies over there.
Love the T-Rex's. Yep, same exact carbs as the early monsters. But the S2R's are injected. We didn't get the TRX in the states but we got the 1st TDM for '92 & 93 only. I've got a
'92 TDM that I love. Good low end torque, handles very well, and comfy. I believe the TRX has different heads- maybe larger valves. And of course it has the 270 crank, like the TDM 850 V.II.

Hi mate,

Yes, we have ethanol, but I have given the wife strict instructions to avoid at all costs!

All head parts are the same for the early TDM's later one's went to 900cc & fuel injection, I get my TRX parts from the states using the TDM model for reference Wink The barrels are different though, the TRX has an extra mount point.
