You guys have been super helpful with my questions, I really appreciate it, hopefully this is the last one for a while.

I didn't discover this until I was parking my bike at a grocery store, but I when I went to turn the bike off I tugged on the key while in the ignition and magically it popped out while the ignition was still set to 'On'. The bike still runs while the key is out of the ignition... I am assuming either the cylinder/barrel is stripped, or someone tried to break into it? I am wondering if there is anything I can do to fix the barrel/cylinder to grip the key better, or if I have to just buy a new ignition switch. I would ideally want to fix what I've got, but replacement switches are relatively cheap on eBay. I tried both the red and black keys, but both still disengage while the bike is on. I realize that if I get a replacement that doesn't have a fuel cap I will need two different keys, but this is better than having my ignition key fly off the bike while I'm riding. The bike is a '99 M750.

Thanks in advance for all your help, I really appreciate your knowledge.

A good locksmith can figure out what's going on with the switch.

'99 M750 wouldn't have a red key, those were 2002 and onwards.

Well, that raises an issue... I wonder why I have a red and black key? At this point I feel like you could probably use a flathead screwdriver to start it.

My guess would be that a previous owner replaced the ignition switch with one from an '02-ish Monster, and the red key came with the black one.

They've got RFID chips in them, no harm or benefit for your M750.

If you have those keys close to another RFID key that is actively being used (like on the keyring with your car key that has a chip in it), the active system may get confused.
